Design as judgement, not decoration.
Shibui Collection is a design practice focused on making clear, deliberate choices – fewer things, done properly. We work on residential and commercial interiors for clients who value calm, clarity and lasting quality.
Our work centres on proportion rather than ornament — modern minimalism that is comfortable rather than stark, elegant rather than showy and textural rather than decorative. Spaces are shaped through architecture, flow and light, with materials, furniture and objects carefully selected and placed to suit how the space is used.
The studio is now based in Hong Kong and continues to work internationally, drawing on experience gained through projects undertaken across the UK, North America, Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean.
Shibui as a concept
The word shibui is often used to describe a quiet kind of beauty — subtle rather than expressive, understated rather than decorative. It works as a guiding idea for interiors that are calm but not severe, objects that are simple but not crude, work that feels finished without being “styled.” Shibui is not minimalism or austerity. It can include colour, texture and imperfection but the effect is warm and elegant. The concept has its roots in Japanese culture – an aesthetic ideal. Though, what interests us is not where it comes from so much as what it describes. Shibui appealed because it describes an attitude rather than a look.
From conversation to decisions
We start every project with a conversation to understand how a space will be used, what matters most to you, and what constraints exist, from architecture to budget. Good spaces come from making clear decisions early on and sticking to them, so we help people make fewer, better decisions about the spaces they live and work in.
At the start of a project there are often too many options and not enough clarity. Most projects don’t suffer from a lack of ideas; they suffer from too many appearing at once. Our role is to slow that moment down and decide what matters. Once priorities are established, everything that follows is coming from a much stronger base. We’re not interested in decorating for effect., we focus on clear layout and proportion, honest use of materials, simple detailing and consistency rather than variety.
Beauty in things
Objects is a selection of pieces we respect — ceramics, glass, metalwork, textiles and furnishings — chosen for their quality, proportion and presence. We don’t use Objects for rounds-ups or “best of” lists. Each piece appears because it feels right: well made, confident, and quietly beautiful.
The writing is plain and specific. It isn’t advice, and it isn’t trend commentary. When we write about someone else’s work, we credit and link to the original. Some items written about here may later be available through the site, but the writing comes first. It’s a way to explain what we value, give credit and share context — not to sell.
What we’re paying attention to
Notes is a place to look more broadly at design — across architecture, places, art, cars, boats and other fields. It’s often underestimated how much design shapes how we feel, behave and live, and how good design can quietly improve the world around us.
Notes is an edited record of what we’ve been paying attention to, what we reflect on and why certain things continue to catch our eye. The selection is subjective, reflecting our own interests, observations and perspective. It’s what we think is elegant, timeless, interesting and worth mentioning, rather than what’s just new.
We add our own commentary, always credit original sources and treat writing as separate from design services.
Working internationally
Shibui Collection draws on experience developed through Kinari Design, whose work extended beyond London to projects and clients across North America, Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean. Over two decades this experience across different cities, cultures and property markets provided insight into how people live, relocate and adapt homes in different cities and cultures.
Working across different countries reveals how strongly residential design is shaped by regulation, culture, climate and patterns of living. A Victorian townhouse in London, a pre-war apartment in New York and a high-rise apartment in Hong Kong may face entirely different constraints, expectations and opportunities.. Clients often need more than design advice. Questions of suitability, renovation potential, regulation, heritage restrictions and long-term adaptability frequently arise before a project begins.
Today, Shibui Collection works with private clients internationally, bringing together that broader design experience with an understanding of how homes are acquired, adapted and renovated in different parts of the world. Alongside renovation and refurbishment projects, this broader experience can help clients assess suitability, renovation potential and long-term adaptability before significant commitments are made.
