Wah Tung

The Wah Tung Collection consists of hand-made porcelain acquired over a number of years from Wah Tung, a long-established Hong Kong ceramics company supplied by workshops in Jingdezhen. The collection combines traditional Chinese forms with contemporary monochrome glazes and includes a limited number of pieces acquired before the company’s closure.

Jingdezhen, in Jiangxi Province, has been associated with porcelain production for more than a thousand years and is often referred to as the porcelain capital of China. From the Song dynasty onwards, its kilns supplied the imperial court and later produced ceramics for export throughout Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Techniques developed in Jingdezhen helped establish many of the forms, glazes
and decorative styles now closely associated with Chinese porcelain.

The city remained active through successive dynasties, including the Yuan, Ming and Qing periods, adapting to changing tastes while maintaining a remarkable continuity of craft. Blue-and-white porcelain, celadon glazes and monochrome wares all have strong connections to Jingdezhen and are still produced there today.

One of the distinguishing features of Chinese ceramics is the longevity of its forms. While decoration and glazing changed significantly over time, a relatively small number of vase and vessel shapes became established and were refined across multiple dynasties. Many of the pieces shown here are based on forms that have remained in continuous use for centuries, even when finished with more contemporary glazes and colours.
